Always a big elevation discrepancy between planned route and actual ride metrics

I always see a big elevation discrepancy between the planned route and the actual ride metrics. The elevation gain is always much higher for the actual ride - 35% to 45% high for most of my routes and rides!

Here is an example:

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13151369 - 27.8 miles with 1,050 ft of climbing

Ride: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/8619539 - 27.8 miles with 1,497 ft of climbing

Is there a good explanation for this discrepancy?
